Penguins unveil new throwback road jersey!

It's finally happening! The transition that began with the Pittsburgh Penguins choosing to wear their throwback third jersey for home playoff games this year culminated with the unveiling of their new matching road sweater this morning.

Pittsburgh gold is officially back!

The club tweeted a video this morning that designated the alternate uniform — launched in 2014 — as the new home uniform for 2016-17. The video also revealed the new white road sweater.

This is exactly what the Penguins should look like. I'm excited about this change and I know a handful of Pittsburgh fans who will be absolutely beside themselves today.

Coincidentally, the Penguins announced this shift away from "Vegas gold" — which has been in use since 2002 — just two days after the city of Las Vegas was granted an NHL expansion franchise.

This unveiling comes on the day of the 2016 NHL Draft, but we're unlikely to see either jersey on stage tonight. Barring any last minute trades, the Pens don't have any selections in Round 1. Their first pick comes tomorrow in Round 2.

Speaking of the draft, let's take a quick look ahead at what else is expected today:

  • The Maple Leafs will officially unveil their new home and road sweaters — though the designs were leaked yesterday by their own app.
  • The Panthers' recently unveiled home and road sweaters should be on hand at the draft tonight.
  • The Kings, Blues and Flyers are also celebrating 50 years next season and will have special jerseys to mark the occasion. The Flyers' is not expected until September, but the Kings and/or Blues could surprise us tonight. Wishful thinking.

But all that's for later. For now, how excited are you about the new look of the Penguins?
