0682: Bolts Flashback

As a Lightning fan living in Seattle, I don't get to many of my team's games these days. But since the NHL's realignment and new method of scheduling, my Bolts are guaranteed to visit nearby Vancouver once a year. That happens this week — on Wednesday, in fact. So in honor of that, I'm designating this Tampa/Vancouver Week on the Concepts page!

Today, we focus on the Lightning. First up is a throwback-inspired home and third jersey set by Kevin Dion. I'm not sure the shading is necessary on the primary logo, but otherwise it's a solid pair.

I also wanted to feature this one by Jonathan Tweedle. It'd be an interesting striping pattern for the Lightning to try. But with the '90s long behind us, I'm not sure we'll ever get the chance to see it happen. But both of these submissions beg the question: Do the Lightning need a black jersey again?

Tomorrow is all about the Canucks!

0482: Big Apple Freak Out

How about a Freak Out Friday for the New York Rangers? Jonathan Tweedle has merged a couple of old NYR logo designs to come up with this. And I'll be honest. It sort of frightens me.

On this Freak Out Friday, we get another blending of brands. This time from Jonathan Tweedle, who has cleverly combined the Winnipeg Jets logo from 1990 with the new one from 2011. And it's definitely freaky. But if the logo isn't enough for you, he's also created a jersey. Alternate, anyone?

0124: Superheroes Meet Hockey

It's not a hockey team. It's not even a sports team. It's Iron Man! Day 4 of No-Hockey Week brings us a series of sweaters that might be worn by the comic book superheroes we're all fascinated by. Jonathan Tweedle has designed jerseys based on the a couple of Avengers costumes.

Along with Iron Man, Jonathan provides a sweater for Captain America. Both are cool enough that I could see a minor league team doing a one-off special jersey night with something similar. We already Star Wars jerseys at least once a season.

It's not the National Hockey League, but a whole different kind of league. Nevill Carney designed sweaters for Justice League members Green Lantern, Batman, Superman, Robin and even the Flash (I'm predicting all the Lightning-related jokes you could possibly make and not finding any of them amusing). I particularly like the Batman jersey based on the costume from the '60s TV series.

There are still plenty more non-hockey hockey concepts to come this week.
